Later That Night...

at "The Cap."

I'll bring you precious contraband
And ancient tales from distant lands
Of conquerors and concubines
And Conjurers from darker times
Betrayal and conspiracy
Sacrilege and heresy
Steve Earle
(crank it up!)

My wife Stephanie and I ran the Capitol Bar for most of the 90's. It was quite a experience. Both good... and sometimes, not so good. However, I've now become part of this town and community in more profoundly deeper and meaningful ways then I could have ever reached otherwise.

Although we've both have moved on in our careers, "The Cap" will always remain a huge part of our lives, history and memories.

Incidentally, The Cap served as the Capitol of the Free State of Socorro during the brief secession of 1950.

It's been that kind of place for over a hundred years around here.

Mike D wants to know what was the best and worst thing about running a bar. Would you ever do it again?

  4. Probably the best thing was the social aspect of it. Especially in a small town (8,000) like Socorro is, by a running a bar you pretty much get to meet and know everybody. The good, the bad and the ugly. Because the Cap is over 100 years old gives it a lot respect in this community, so that made running it special too. We'd book music on the weekends and that was also a blast to be involved in. Because the college kids would hangout at the cap we we're able to mix up the styles of music quite a bit. Country, rock, reagge, blues, etc.

    The worst things about it....

Dealing with drunks and problem drinkers, dealing with law enforcement, the hours are bad, patrons/employees often are involved in various nefarious deals and goings on. One's own alchohol consumption will tend to go up simply by having to be around it.... CONSTANTLY. It's one of those businesses that as soon as the cat walks out the mice (patrons/employees) will play. You have to manage it constantly just to keep a handle on things.

Would we do it again.... nope. Had a great time while we ran it, but we're too old for something like that now.

However, if they ever decide to put a grille in the Cap, which would serve great burgers has been a dream of ours for years, ever since the outdoor patio was put in....that we would do.
